We all know how much Americans love their grease, but is Burger King’s latest offering of a bacon sundae taking it too far?
The meaty desert, which is due to be unveiled to the U.S. market this Thursday, features rich and creamy vanilla ice cream, drizzled with chocolate fudge and caramel, topped with bacon crumbles and finally, garnished with thick-cut, hardwood smoked bacon.
This outrageous treat is affordable, with a suggested retail price of US$2.49. But it also takes a heavy toll on consumer’s waistlines. The sundae clocks in at 510 calories, 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar.
The introduction of the meaty sundae is the latest attempt by the fast food chain to lure in new customers and reverse sliding market share, an effort that started soon after the company was taken private by the private equity firm 3G Capital in late 2010.
Earlier this year, the chain launched its biggest-ever menu expansion, including fruit smoothies, snack wraps and new salads. The items were intended to go after a broader audience of moms and families, a shift from the chain’s previous strategy of courting young men with calorie bombs.
