EMI has announced (in keeping with their practice of making intelligent, well-thought-out, digitally savvy decisions) that they are suing Ireland for piracy. Yes, Ireland. As in this Ireland.
This lawsuit is a result of Ireland’s non-compliance with European Law regarding the blocking or diverting of ISPs that are known to breach copyright law.
It is speculated that EMI will attempt to establish a link between Irish law (or lack there of) and the pirating of music from EMI artists like Julio Iglesias Jr., KT Tunstall, STEREO and, of course, Snoop Dogg.
While a number of digital labels, such as RCRD LBL, have carved out a niche for themselves by giving away a good portion of their music for free, many big labels (read: EMI) continue to bang their heads against the digital wall in an attempt to out-muscle the Internet. For EMI, however, being out of touch isn’t something new. Remember in 1977 when EMI dropped the Sex Pistols for “… notorious behavior in public…” prompting this track from the band? Viva La Resistance!
