The best thing about Motëm’s Wavelength 12 mixtape – aside from it featuring pretty much all of the four-day festival’s line up – is the intro: a little slice of Cockney-inflected rap elegance, courtesy of Rick Ross’ latest mixtape Rich Forever.
Since 2000, Wavelength’s been pushing independent music in this city and has been fortunate to break and feature artists like Broken Social Scene, Holy Fuck, Feist, Peaches and Caribou. We’re not too sure what “warm Tod’s loafers and cashmere socks” have to do with the city’s longest running underground music festival – aside from making up a classy show-going ensemble – but it seems like Motëm’s way of hinting at the diversity of this weekend’s showcase. There’s tough rock courtesy of Metz and Fucked Up and winsome stuff The Weather Station alongside the pummeling pop of Bonjay and PS I Love You.
Wavelength’s four nights of shows starts with Metz on Thursday at The Shop under Parts & Labour. Fucked Up headlines Steam Whistle Brewing Friday, Montrealer’s No Joy take The Great Hall on Saturday, and a showcase (featuring Motëm’s electronic funk) at The Garrison closes the fest Sunday.
