StandardTapes 26: Jane's Party
"We were all jazz school nerds who had a common interest in rocking dance floors full of sweaty people"

Jane’s Party’s Zach Sutton, Tom Ionescu, Devon James, and Jeff Giles

Tell us about Jane’s Party.

JP is a band born in a garage up in the Jane and Finch area of Toronto. We were all jazz school nerds who had a common interest in rocking dance floors full of sweaty people. Our first album The Garage Sessions was released in 2009 and recorded in said garage. From there we’ve played countless shows across the country, released an EP and two singles and we’ll finally be releasing our second full length album Hot Noise this Saturday.

“‘Till You Got Yours” off Jane’s Party’s new album Hot Noise

Where and how was this mix recorded?

I (Zach) put it together in my room late one rainy day, using a YouTube to MP3 converter and Logic to put into one blissful playlist.

What was the idea behind the mix?

I decided to be democratic about it. There are four of us in the band so I told everyone to shoot me three tracks they can’t get enough of right now.

Here’s the breakdown:

Devon is definitely the most current of all us. Knows what’s going on around him. His choices were: Vampire Weekend- “Hannah Hunt”, Delta Spirt- “Bushwick Blues” and Born Ruffians- “Needles”

Tom is going through a pretty psychedelic phase. His choices were: Mac DeMarco- “Freaking Out The Neighbourhood” , Unknown Mortal Orchestra- “Secret Xtians”, By Divine Right- “Cupid in Oil Skins”

Jeff is an old soul. His choices were: Girls- “Love Like A River”, David Bowie- “Oh You Pretty Things” and The Beatles- “One after 909”

I (Zach) am a sucker for good song about love. My Choices were: Kathleen Edwards- “Chameleon”, Justin Townes Earle- “Look The Other Way” and Sam Cash- “What I’m Missing”

In your own words, can you describe the sound of Jane’s Party?

Honest Pop with a bit of a rock and definitely some roll.

Where can the Standard’s readers see you perform next?

Saturday, June 1st – Cameron House Back Room at 11:30pm!

On the new album, Hot Noise:

It was recorded at Ill Eagle studios (run by the boys from the band Zeus) and produced by our lovely and talented friend Taylor Knox. We had a bunch of tunes and hadn’t recorded a full length in four years… seemed like a good time to get another album out before everyone forgets about us!

Anything to add?

Come get your faces melted this Saturday! And then buy the CD.

1. Vampire Weekend – Hannah Hunt

2. Kathleen Edwards- Chameleon

3. Delta Spirit- Bushwick Blues

4. Justin Townes Earle- Look The Other Way

5. Mac DeMarco- Freaking Out The Neighbourhood

6. Unknown Mortal Orchestra- Secret Xtians

7. By Divine Right- Cupid In Oilskins

8. Girls- Love Like A River

9. Born Ruffians- Needle

10. Sam Cash- What I’m Missing

11. David Bowie- Oh You Pretty Things
