Urbee 2, a new car made with a 3D printer, is almost ready to hit the road. All it needs is an engine. Jim Kor, an engineer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is set to create an inexpensive hybrid vehicle, perfect for students. “I envision it will be like a Model-T or VW (Bug) for our century” he told Pioneer Press. 3D printing technology is easy and efficient, enabling Kor to create a smaller part overnight or a bigger one in the span of a few days. Urbee 2 is a step up from Urbee in that it has an interior is an oval, 3-wheeled contraption, which looks sleek and futuristic. However, while all the other parts are made with 3D printing technology, the engine and base chassis will have to be metal. Kor is working on a prototype engine that will be a 10-horsepower diesel-hybrid with a 63-volt electric motor allowing the car to reach 64 kilometres an hour. He already has 14 orders on the model.
