Hold on to your horses! Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker wants to get rid of your monitor lizards, snapping turtles, alligator snapping turtles, red-eared sliders, cranes, rails, eagles, eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, seals, sea lions, walruses, whales, dolphins, porpoises annnnnd hedgehogs. In a report expected to come out this fall, De Baeremaeker will outline his recommended animals to be prohibited to be kept as pets in the city. “I love hedgehogs, that’s why people shouldn’t be hoarding them in their basements. I love kangaroos and penguins, as well. That’s why I don’t want people having them on their apartment balconies,” he said.
De Baerenmaeker also brought a box of kittens to committee to demonstrate support for a no-kill policy for shelters, and opposition towards a proposal raising the fee of surrending a dog from $35 to $50. Councillor Paula Fletcher accused council of “gouging for surrendering your dog.”
