The winning cheese.
Looking for the cheese to wow the guests and your next wine & cheese soirée? No need to turn to the French or the Swiss, Canada’s own cheese-making community has you covered with award-winning cheese from Friday night’s 8th bi-annual Canadian Cheese Grand Prix in Montreal. Winners in 19 cow’s-milk-only categories were selected from 225 entries from across the country, with the top prize of Grand Champion going to Vaughan-based Quality Cheese Inc., for it’s Ricotta, which also took home the win in the “Fresh Cheese” category.
Over the past months, the jury, chaired by well-known cheese expert, Phil Bélanger, had the daunting, albeit delicious task of tasting and whittling down 58 finalists to just one winner per category. Amongst the winner’s you’ll find a Applewood Smoked Cheddar from Cows Creamery in PEI, an organic raw milk cheese which took home the title in the “Flavoured Cheese with added non-particulate flavourings” category and Bleu d’Élizabeth, a blue cheese from Fromagerie du Presbytère in Quebec, which won both the “Blue Cheese” and “Organic Cheese” titles. The majority of the winners were from Ontario and Quebec, click here a full list of winners.
