Orson Scott Card has been at the forefront of the anti-gay movement for years. Since the 90s and into the 00s the author of Ender’s Game has made public comments about the unacceptability of gay relations, particularly marriage. In a piece he wrote for the Mormon times in 2009, he said: “Marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down.” That’s why the Comic Book Shoppe in Ottawa is no longer stocking any of his work.
The owners were surprised with Card’s new gig, writing a story for DC Comics in Adventures of Superman. As an “iconic character to the gay community,” Superman stands for truth, justice and freedom, which is a stark difference from Card’s beliefs. As supporters of LGBT rights the Comic Book Shoppe’s two locations have pulled his work and are only offering the Card issue of Adventures of Superman through order. “I’m telling my customers I want to boycott this book. You have the freedom of choice whether you want to buy it or not, but we’re saying, please don’t,” Rob Spittall, the owner of Comic Book Shoppe 2 told CBC. Since then they have received a lot of support from people all around the continent for standing up for what they believe in.
