Alleged gambling ring bust in Markham
A Markham Super Bowl party turned sour when police broke up an alleged illegal gambling ring on the premises, on Sunday night.
CP24 reports the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) used a search warrant to dismantle a reported multi-million dollar illegal gambling ring at Le Parc Banquet and Concert Hall — an investigation reportedly two years in the making.
CTV Toronto reports six people were arrested, but 2,000 were at the venue at the time of the search. Described as an invitation-only event, the guests watched the first half of the Super Bowl and were supposedly set to receive dinner, an appearance by Playboy centrefolds, and an open bar.
Additional details are expected to be released by both the York Regional Police and the RCMP on Monday.
GTA snow squall warning
Brace yourself for a snow squall warning in the GTA!
While the city of Toronto is not included in any weather warnings or watches, Environment Canada estimates up to 15 centimetres of localized snow will fall around the GTA. In particular, parts of York Region, Durham Region and Newmarket are affected, as are other sections of southern Ontario.
CP24 writes drivers should prepare for hazardous driving conditions, snow accumulation and poor visibility while on their morning commute.
But, don’t fret. Wiarton Willie called for just six more weeks of winter on Friday, a prediction legally-bound to the powers of Bill Murray.
Michael Buble, Junos Host
Justin Bieber will host Saturday Night Live in New York City this weekend, but Michael Buble will host the Juno Awards on April 21, in Regina.
The Canadian crooner made the hosting announcement in a 30-second Super Bowl TV spot which featured him in bed withCanada’s sweethearts, Chavril (Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne).
Buble, a Burnaby, B.C. native, has won 11 Juno trophies, including Album of the Year in 2012 for his Christmas album. The ‘Just Haven’t Met You Yet’ singer has also made several successful appearances on SNL (Hamm and Buble, anyone?), and is expecting his first child with wife Luisana Lopilato. He also recently hosted a primetime Christmas special for NBC.
The singer told the Canadian Press, in a statement, that, “It’s a huge honour to be the host of a show that has done so much for Canadian talent, including myself.”
Juno nominations will be announced on Feb. 19, the day after Family Day.
