U of T ‘sex club’ party proceeds

A University of Toronto student group will have its ‘sexy social’ on Monday after all, following a few days of controversy for its proposed ‘epic student sex club adventure.’

The University of Toronto Sexual Education Centre (SEC) is affiliated with the school’s student union, and plans to take members and willing participants to the Oasis Aqua Lounge. The Toronto Star writes the event was organized for the university’s sexual awareness week, but gained somewhat unwanted publicity when a Reddit post in the University of Waterloo forum labelled the night out as an orgy.

However, external education and outreach co-ordinator Dylan Tower told the Star the party is not an orgy, unlike what the Reddit post “U of T is holding an orgy and you’re invited” would suggest. Instead, Tower said, to the Star, that the party is just an introduction to the sex club scene in Toronto, and “there’s no prodding or pushing in that direction.”

The SEC also held a party at the Oasis Aqua Lounge last year, but the U of T was quick to make a statement on Wednesday, writing to the Star“The event in question is being organized by the Sexual Education Centre, an independent organization, and NOT by University of Toronto.”

The ‘Just Drop It’ NHL campaign

The Toronto Maple Leafs and other clubs may be giving away over 1,000 tickets to its respective delayed home openers, but one frustrated hockey fan in Los Angeles is still not satisfied.

The Canadian Press writes Steve Chase has created a ‘Just Drop It’ campaign in hopes it will make the NHL understand the repercussions of shutting down this stream of professional hockey. Chase told the news agency “the growth of the game is desperately in trouble,” and the league’s actions put the future of the sport in jeopardy.

The ‘Just Drop It’ Facebook page has nearly 23,000 likes, and asks supporters to not attend or watch the first 10 NHL matches on TV, and to stop buying merchandise, too.

Chase, who was born in Montreal, hopes this movement will send a message to the NHL by making this 48-game season slightly less profitable.

Live Strong is ‘disappointed’

Following Lance Armstrong’s doping confessions to Oprah Winfrey on Thursday night, the Live Strong Foundation he co-founded has issued a statement saying it is “disappointed” in the cyclist’s admissions.

The Hollywood Reporter writes Armstrong admitted to using three banned substances — EPO, human growth hormone and testosterone — and ‘blood doping’ to amplify his cycling abilities in each of his seven Tour de France victories. Furthermore, when asked if it was “humanly possible” to win without these practices, Armstrong said, “not in my opinion.”

The charity foundation, formerly known as the Lance Armstrong Foundation, said in The Hollywood Reporter, “we… are disappointed by the news that Lance Armstrong misled people during and after his cycling career, including us. Earlier this week, Lance apologized to our staff and we accepted his apology in order to move on and chart a strong, independent course.”

Still, the foundation did express gratitude for what Armstrong had done for the organization as a cancer survivor, and to the “entire cancer community.”
