Free beer (samples) at Leafs home opener; wheel falls off plane at Pearson; Jessica Chastain's box office domination. Your Morning Cable

The Toronto Maple Leafs will give away free beverages at Monday’s home opener, and yes, that includes complementary beer samples.

After defeating the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 at the Bell Centre on Saturday, 680 News reports a series of promotions will occur at Monday’s game. Free Coca-Cola fountain drinks will be offered all night as the Leafs take on the Buffalo Sabres, as will Molson Canadian samples. Attendees will also receive a Scotiabank Leafs scarf when they enter the Air Canada Centre.

Furthermore, the franchise also promises some white and blue alumni at all the gates. These perks are in addition to the 1,000 or more free tickets being distributed across Toronto before the home opener.

But the real question is… Will any of this help you welcome back a shorter hockey season?

Wheel falls off plane at Pearson

A landing gear wheel fell off an Air Canada Jazz plane following its Toronto Pearson International Airport landing on Sunday, but no passengers or crew were injured.

The Canadian Press reports the right wheel on the nose gear came loose as the small propeller plane came to a full stop. The aircraft was carrying 72 passengers, and hailed from North Bay, Ont.

Jazz spokesperson Manon Stuart told the news agency the pilot kept control of the aircraft during the landing, but that it was also greeted by emergency vehicles just in case.

The airline plans to investigate what prompted the wheel to come loose.

Jessica Chastain’s box office domination

Ubiquitous triple-threat Jessica Chastain won the top two spots at the box office this weekend. Her new horror film Mama won the weekend with an estimated $28.1-million gross in North America, and the Oscar-nominated Zero Dark Thirty took in around $17.6-million.

The ingenue’s films muscled out the Mark Wahlberg vs. Russell Crowe actioner Broken City, which premiered to a third-place finish, earning $9.1-million.

Chastain’s box office feat is highly unusual, and rather impressive. The California-born actress has appeared in over 10 films in just under two years, but she still largely remains unknown to most audiences, likely due to her versatility. The Julliard-trained star is nominated for her second consecutive Academy Award this year for her role in Zero Dark Thirty, and was previously recognized for her role in 2011’s The Help.
