Prime Minister Harper faced reporters about the Mike Duffy scandal for the first time while on a trip to Peru. He claimed he didn’t know about the personal cheque his chief of staff wrote to Duffy until he read about it in the media. [National Post]

Tomas Mulcair said he and the NDP will start talking to Canadians about abolishing the Senate, and will fashion his next campaign around the issue. Ryan Gosling, the 32-year-old Canadian and the world’s hottest man (in my opinion), was a no-show at the Cannes Film Festival. He couldn’t attend his own film premiere because he’s working on his directorial debut in Detroit. [Globe and Mail]

In London, dramatic footage of a suspected terrorist attack emerged, showing a man with blood covered hands holding a cleaver and a knife. He speaks about jihad, and later footage shows the aftermath after he and another suspect were shot by police. [The Guardian]

Iceland has suspended European Union entry talks until after holding a referendum that is almost certain to reject membership. The decision is a blow to the EU, which is no longer considered a safe haven for small countries after the eurozone crisis. [The Telegraph]
