It looks like there’s no need for Ontarians to head to the polls come June; NDP leader Andrea Horwath has pledged support for the 2013 Liberal provincial budget.
“It’s not everything we wanted. It’s not everything people have told us they need,” Horwath said to reporters at Queen’s Park. “But we’re proud to deliver results that will make people’s lives better and government more accountable,” she added.
While the budget doesn’t address all of the NDP’s concerns, the Liberals have addressed Horwath’s requests for increased accountability in government spending. Plans to create a new Financial Accountability Office that would serve as a government spending watchdog have been established. Premier Kathleen Wynne noted “accountability measures across the health-care system” would also be implemented.
NDP support is necessary to avoid a provincial election next month because Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak has said his party will oppose the Liberal budget. Hudak has said the Liberal’s no longer have authority because of the gas-plant controversy.
