You may have heard about the Half the Sky Movement, a book and PBS TV series that aims to empower women around the world against oppression. This week, the movement has released a facebook game that continues the work of Half the Sky founders Sheryl WuDunn and Nicholas Kristoff.
The game’s goal is to raise awareness amongst the social-media generation about the challenging circumstances some women live in, in places as varied as the United States, South-East Asia, and the Middle East. As you play the game, helping main character Radhika complete tasks for her family, game sponsors will duplicate your actions in the real world. For example, collecting books for young girls in the game will unlock donations of real-life books for Room to Read, a non-profit organization that aims to improve literacy in the developing world. Game missions will take players from India to Kenya, Vietnam to Afghanistan, and end in the United States, donating money to a list of non-profit partners along the way.
Players also have the option of donating directly to the game’s non-profit partners, which include the Fistula Foundation, GEMS, Heifer International, ONE, Room to Read, the United Nations Foundation, and World Vision.
A partnership between Games for Change (a non-profit that works to create social change with digital games), Canadian game developers Frima Studio and Show of Force, and Zynga, is behind the game’s creation, though financial support comes from a large list of other backers.
