Cory Booker, the Newark mayor best known outside of Jersey for saving his neighbour from a burning building, has moved on to his next life-saving project: jewelry made of illegal guns. “The Caliber Collection” by Jewelry For A Cause is a line of hand made bracelets made of the melted steel from 250 guns seized by the Newark Police Department and brass from shell casings collected from crime scenes. Promoting the cuffs and bangles on the Rachel Maddow Show last night, Booker said that “a large percentage of the proceeds go to more gun buy-backs” through Newark’s Gun Buyback Amnesty program. The ultimate goal of the project is to get guns off the streets of Newark.
Prices range from $150 for a steel cuff to $375 for a brass bangle set with a diamond. Every piece is engraved with a serial number and the word NEWARK. According to the Caliber Collection website, “The name Caliber was chosen for its two meanings; the caliber of a gun and how the caliber of a city is raised when illegal guns are taken off its streets.”
