Saturday night marked the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where both the media and Hollywood’s television and movie stars come out to the White House for an evening of food, wine, and banter with the First Family. Obama himself was in fine form too, cracking wise about everything from Congress (“My ‘charm offensive’ has helped me learn some interesting things about what’s going on in Congress. It turns out absolutely nothing.”), to the media, (“I know CNN has taken some knocks lately. The truth is, I admire their commitment to covering all sides of a story — just case one of them happens to be accurate.”) and of course, himself (“I look in the mirror and say I’m not the strapping young Muslim socialist that I used to be.”).
He roasts the media good, guys. I was actually pretty surprised. Whoever wrote those jokes definitely deserves a raise or something. Once he’s done with the whole president thing, Obama should defintitely look into starring in his own sitcom, with Michelle and the kids, of course. Conan O’Brien could be his weird neighbour. NBC, you’re running out of good sitcom fodder, you can totally have this idea for free.
