When Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell put up the Kickstarter page yesterday to fund the film version of the cancelled-too-soon cult TV show, they had no idea that they would be breaking Kickstarter records by reaching $1.3 million in six hours, or that the funding goal would be met within 11. They weren’t even sure that a month would be enough time. But that’s not what happened, and it looks like the movie is on track for release sometime in 2014.
Veronica Mars first aired in 2004, and is the story of a high school (later college) age girl who follows in her father’s footsteps as a private investigator. It was much loved by fans, but was cancelled in 2007 after its third season due to low ratings. Thomas had been talking about and dreaming of doing a film version a lot during the past six years, but unfortunately was unable to find anyone to fund it. Studios simply didn’t think there was a public interest in it. Boy, were they wrong, given how quickly this got funded. One fan even paid $10,000 for a speaking role in the film. Warner Brothers Digital Distribution have already agreed to distribute, promote and market the film if Thomas could reach the Kickstarter goal. They’ve currently raised about $2.5 million, with 29 days left on the clock, so fans who haven’t donated yet still have plenty of time to do so.
Which prematurely cancelled TV show should we raise from the dead next? Firefly (again)!? Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles!? Imagine the possibilities guys!
