Cupid came early this year with the big release of David Bowie’s video for Valentine’s Day, the fourth single on his new album The Next Day. The video paints the portrait of a lonely-lookin’ Bowie on single stool in what appears to be a cathedral, riddled with anger and ripping the guitar in what is probably the least-romantic Valentine’s Day hit ever written.
The video has shots of eerie shadows on the wall, lots of Sinead-esque close-ups of his frowning face and heart-melting lyrics: “It’s in his scrawny hand, it’s in his icy heart, it’s happening today”. Swoon. With Bowie’s last few vids featuring a cast of eye-catching characters from Tilda Swinton to Gary Oldman, we’re glad to see Bowie rocking it solo for the song named after the most couple-y day of the year.
