Brampton Teen Receives Producer Credit on New Jay-Z Album
Listen to her track "Crown"

The GTA hip-hop saga for the week continues, with yesterday’s revelation that sixteen-year-old Brampton native Ebony Oshunrinde AKA WondaGurl will be receiving a production credit on “Crown,” a track off Jay-Z’s new album Magna Carta Holy Grail. The album was released yesterday exclusively to Samsung customers.

The young producer started making her own beats at age nine, when she began watching YouTube videos that taught her how to use advanced music software. Her hobby became something more serious when she won Toronto’s Battle of the Beat Makers last year at only fifteen, leading her to sign on with BlackBox. The beat made its way to Jay-Z via Travis Scott, a young rapper and producer who happened to be working with Jay on the album when Oshunrinde sent him the beat. Scott sent the young girl a message reading: “I’m about to change your life.”

“It’s amazing to see somebody with that much talent working as hard as she can to make the most of it at such a young age,” said Ian Stanger, a representative with Black Box in the Metro interview, “It’s her work that people should be paying attention to, not the fact that’s she 16.”

Correction: This article previously said that WondaGurl was from Mississauga, but she’s from Brampton. Apologies!
