A throwback in the best sense, the new single from The Get By—rappers Justis and Mantis, and DJ Pangea—builds on the smoothed-out template of 00s-era hip-hop. But Toronto rapper/producer Rich Kidd gets credit for taking “Faster” beyond neo-soul-tinged humdrum, updating it with a glitchy pulse that anchors snatches of gleaming melody in its orbit. Richie Hennessey from storied Canadian rap group Brassmunk delivers a lifting hook, while Justis, Mantis and Rich Kidd wax on that forever hip-hop premise: progress. “Faster” is elusive and warm, real but not too hung up on it, and the perfect thing to burrow into at home or at your desk on a moody, fall day like today.
