As Canada’s top basketball prospect and the consensus best high school player in the world, Andrew Wiggins has been subject to intense media attention in the last year. That’s to be expected when your dad is a former NBA player, your mom is an Olympic silver medalist and you’re the favourite to go first overall in the 2014 NBA draft. Amidst all the hype, yesterday Sports Illustrated published a story that, while acknowledging Wiggins’ indisputable talent, questions whether or not his coaching and development have imbued him with a strong enough work ethic, and accuses the Toronto-native of not playing hard against lesser opponents.
Last night, Wiggins answered those questions in a big way.
Mere hours after the Sports Illustrated story went online, Wiggins delivered a monster performance proving he is always force to be reckoned with on the court. Wiggins nearly outscored the opposing team when he put away 57 points to lead his West Virginia high school team Huntington Prep to a 111-59 victory over Marietta College’s Junior Varsity team. Wiggins made an astounging 24 of 28 shots, including 3 of 5 from beyond the three point line. Add 13 rebounds and 4 blocks and you have one incredible stat-line.
Anybody else have any questions?
Canadians can catch a glimpse of this homegrown talent at McMaster University February 17th for the Family Day Hoops Classic.
