This week, we’re taking Uniform Project off the streets and into the halls of Branksome, where four private-school girls show us how they wear their daily plaids.
Izza, Grade 2, says socks are the best part of her uniform, even though they always seem to be falling down. She loves wearing her red plaid boots at recess on rainy days, plus an oversized hoodie.
Bessie, Grade 4, is wearing a jacket from Sporting Life that matches her plaid, which she’s super-pumped about, and her bracelets are handmade by friends. She loves the Branksome uniform store where she gets her head bands. “They have green, blue, black head bands,” she says, “and pink usually, but right now they’re sold out of pink.” Asked about Justin Bieber, she’s like, “Yeah he’s good, but he’s just turning into a little gangster now.” Good point, Bessie.
Sarah‘s a bilingual Branksome girl with a passion for politics. She’s fascinated by how, no matter what their socioeconomic background, nobody ever seems to be satisfied. Her favourite Gossip Girl is Blair, mostly just because she wears headbands–and Sarah loves headbands. In fact, there’s nothing she doesn’t love about her uniform, but on “grub” days (no uniform days) she wears sweatpants. Her favorite places to shop are Gap, Forever 21, and Urban Outfitters. The pins she wears signify her involvement in the Canadian Club, debating society, and more.
Julie is the head girl at Branksome. Her favourite part of the uniform is the “professional”-looking tie and the plaid in their kilts, which relates to their clans. Clans? Yes, each Branksome girl belongs one of eight clans, and the clans compete with the others, Quidditch-style.? As the head girl, the elected leader, Julie gets to wear the red kilt and blazer. The “accessories” on her tie represent her active role in the debate team, ongoing participation in sports, and the silver Duke of Ed pin is for logging hours of “action, service, and creativity.” Julie prefers Serena to Blair and shops at the Gap, Aritzia, Urban Outfitters, and sometimes TNT.
