Firefox OS phones are set to launch in 2013
Can’t decide between Windows Phone 8, iPhone 5 or Android Jelly Bean? Now Mozilla, creator of the Firefox web browser, is throwing its hat into the ring and launching their own mobile operating system. Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE Corp. confirmed plans to launch smartphones using Firefox OS to the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.
Mozilla originally announced plans to launch an open operating system framework in August. The operating system is developed with HTML5 so that the device’s capabilities can be developed as HTML5 applications. Mozilla aims to free developers from the need to re-write apps to fit every different mobile phone platform.
Mobile operators Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, and Telenor all plan to offer Firefox OS devices.
ZTE’s smartphones are set to launch within the first quarter of 2013.
