January has a tendency to take fashion too seriously. Retailers and marketers can’t help it; they’re flying high from the holidays, New Year’s resolutions reign supreme over shoppers’ better sense, and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. So, yes, those rainbow running shoes worthy of My Little Pony are a must-have! (Friendship has nothing on the magic of pretty workout wear.) And don’t even think about skipping that heinously overpriced lacy lingerie… your relationship might depend on it! Did we mention it’s engagement season? Where’s your rock, huh?
So it can be a relief to see some fashion that errs on the flippant side. It seems Brian Lichtenberg took a cue from Commes des Fuckdown for his BLTEE S/S 2013 collection. Cozy unisex sweatshirts, hoodies, and beanie hats in orange, red, black, and neon yellow are perfect for typically wet and cool Canadian springs or summer nights at the cottage. Cheeky large-print fonts spoof major labels, advertising ‘Féline’ instead of Céline (underlined with a ‘MEOW’) and ‘Homiès’ rather than Hermès. The collection is a little bit subversive, a lot comfy, and, come on, you can’t go wrong paying tribute to cats these days.
