So, I found this excellent new video series on people and style in Toronto and I think you should… okay, that is a straight-up a lie. Adam Levett is my friend, and he and his brother Christopher asked me several months ago if they could record me (hungover, I think) for said series. You can watch me above, if you like. Or you can visit their new Tumblr, Artifact (levettbrothers.tumblr.com), and watch mini-profiles of Levett’s mad cool girlfriend, Sarah Kosloff, or stylist Corey Ng, or ex-model Sorrell Scrutton, all talking about what makes their style, or style in general, work.
The Levetts say they began with exclusively “fashion people” because people in this industry really speak the language. “As the project develops,” they write by email, “we can see it moving further and further away from fashion. There’s a genuine curiosity on our part to find out where people are coming from.” Even if they’re just from around the corner? “We think Toronto is sort of boring,” say the Levetts. “But we grew up in Toronto, and that is such a Toronto thing to say. Everyone seems to look the same, all melted together. Although, there is a sudden focus on details and and craftmanship, so while everyone looks the same it comes down to the details. And again, we are speaking about a small portion of Toronto. As far as I can tell everyone outside my neighbourhood is a slob wearing the same H&M scarf, but I’m sure they think we look like Ichabod Crane or goth Liberace.”
