3 Musical Experiences We'd Like to See on Tunezy
For $100, you could become Broken Social Scene's vital 26th member

Screencap of Tunezy’s website

In November, Billboard’s FutureSound conference honoured Toronto music start-up Tunezy, with their top Innovator award. The award marked the culmination of a whirlwind year for co-founders Brandon Chu and Derrick Fung, who left a well-paying job in finance to start Tunezy.

Tunezy is a online marketplace for musicians with a twist. Using Tunezy, recording artists can sell almost anything, including merchandise, digital downloads, and experiences. And it’s that ability to sell “experiences” that sets Tunezy apart from competitors like Bandcamp. The current range of experiences and quality of artists selling them leaves more to be desired (they currently only support unsigned independent musicians), but it’s exciting to think about the potential for marquee artists to sell unique and engaging experiences on the service. It’s likely for that reason that Billboard decided to honour Tunezy and its founder with their top innovator award. It’s also that potential that inspired the team at Toronto Standard to think of three fun and wild experiences we’d like to see grace the service in the future.

Fly Aboard Rihanna’s Next 777 Tour

Anyone that has visited Gawker in the past month has likely read the saga of Rihanna’s 777 plane tour. RiRi invited a group of 150 journalists to fly aboard her Boeing 777 jet as she visited 7 cities in 7 days. Sounds cool, right? Well, it was until, several days into the tour, Rihanna hid herself in a “panic room” while the music journalists started chanting “just one quote!” But what was a nightmare for journalists would have likely been a blast for someone with no obligation to file a story at the end of the trip. In fact, there’s likely a collection wealthy megafans who would do anything to get a chance to go on tour with their favourite band or artist.

Watch a Romantic Comedy with Drake

On a more local level, the service could score a major coup if it got the city’s current biggest musical export, Drake, to sign up. The range of experiences that Drake could potentially offer are almost endless, but given his recent streak as a caring nice guy, we think that a night watching romantic comedies with the guy would be a good idea. After all, a night watching The Wedding Singer with Drizzy has the potential to be magical. Bonus points if the movie nightout includes a tour of his future home.

Become a Fringe Member of Broken Social Scene for a Night

A band like Broken Social Scene could offer – if it were to get back together, and that’s a big IF at this point – a chance to join the band as a fringe member for one night. Before it went on hiatus, the mega group counted among its ranks almost 25 concurrent members, so it’s not like a casual observer would notice an extra and out-of-place person onstage. Besides, with their love of baroque instrumentation, the band would likely welcome a dedicated cow bell player – just make sure you can keep time with the rest of the group.

Of course, these merely scratch the surface of Tunezy’s potential for unique and awesome fan experiences. On Tuesday, December 11, Tunezy is holding a holiday and anniversary party at the Burroughes Building to celebrate a successful first year. Why not take the opportunity to tell the Tunezy team some of the experiences you’d like to see on the site?
