App of the Week: TED
Rob Kirsic: "I haven't had the pleasure of attending a talk in the city, but with this app I don't have to worry about waiting for them to come to me"

TED, standing for Technology, Entertainment and Design, with its tagline, “Ideas worth Spreading’, brings together intelligent, provocative and interesting speakers to discuss a multitude of ideas all in an effort to educate. The talks come across as worthwhile and very informative.

I haven’t had the pleasure of attending a talk in the city, but with this app I don’t have to worry about waiting for them to come to me, I can access the discussion from the palm of my hand. This free app, available for iPhone and Android, offers a wealth of videos for users to view and search through.

The TED app offers users up-to-the-minute videos, the ability to browse and search using tags, themes and ratings, and sharing videos through social media, email and text messages. In addition, users can bookmark and download videos to watch later and have the ability to listen to talks, if watching video isn’t practical.

Topics include green energy, architecture, design, evolution, food, and the list goes on and on, which only adds to the depth of this app. This app is like a visual catalogue or encyclopedia on your phone.

Some of the speakers I found through this app include T. Boone Pickens, a previous oil tycoon who now promotes alternative energies, A.J. Jacobs, author of several interesting and humourous books, including my favourite The Year of Living Biblically, actor and political activist Jane Fonda, and everyone in between.

The only potential issue with this app may come with the downloading or streaming of videos on your phone. If your connection isn’t the greatest, it may be tough to watch streaming videos. But, the TED app addresses this issue by allowing audio downloads and streaming, which can make it easier, if connectivity and downloading is an issue.

Overall, I would recommend this app if you are interested in TED talks, interested in learning about different things, and want to hear from a wide variety of speakers on a wide variety of topics. The app is easy-to-use, has a ton of information to go through and makes it very easy to access, watch and share videos. You won’t go wrong adding this app on your phone.
