The Toronto Raptors have come one step closer to getting their dream practice facility built.
City council voted 38-2 in favour of building the new exhibition grounds practice facility today. Brothers Rob and Doug Ford were the only two councillors to vote against the motion.
The mayor said he would support the plan if Toronto Community Housing was guaranteed use of the facility. However, rather than vote on his suggestion, council decided to defer the decision to city staff. In a media scrim with reporters after the vote, the mayor said, “They’ve just insulted every single kid in Toronto Community Housing.” Ford appears to have become a champion of underprivileged youth overnight; he recently voted against a motion to help gay homeless youth.
The city will receive $2.6-million over the course of 20 years as a result of the deal, which, you know, can be put toward funding new and existing programs that support underprivileged youth.
