Toronto could receive a new Waterfront LRT line if two of the city’s top bureaucrats have their way.
According to the Globe and Mail, TTC CEO Andy Byford and City Manager Joe Pennachetti have pitched the province on a new Waterfront LRT project. Their proposed line would include the East Bayfront LRT and a resurrected version of Transit City’s Waterfront West LRT. The hope is that, when finished, the new line will ease congestion along the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard.
Pennachetti expects the project will cost between $600-million and $1-billion to make into reality.
It’s an ambitious play by the two men, and one that makes a lot of sense, but given the vehemence most people in the city have expressed toward light rail transit, it’s one that will be difficult to bring to life. [via blogTO]
