In a weekly series, photographer Voula Monoholias goes behind the curtain to see where and how creatives live.
This week, Architect Marc Kyriacou of MarcKyr Inc. invited Monoholias into his corner suite condo in the heart of Toronto’s Entertainment District.
Why architecture?
Marc: Because of STAR WARS. I was a freak about it when I was a kid. Used to sit drawing all the drawings from the movie sketch books. The designs of the sets and props… Loved it. Lego might have had some influence too.
Favorite project you’ve worked on?
Marc: Hmmmmm. While I was at Yabu Pushelberg we did GFT Canada’s offices. They were the people who sold Valentino, Armani and the like. We made this “city” of acrylic cubes for offices that were housed in this cavernous warehouse. Quite a neat effect.
What are you working on now?
Marc: Now, I’m doing the Beer Boutique stores, a lounge at the Molson Amphitheatre and will start a new space on Temperance at Yonge with an 8500 sq. foot rooftop shortly.
Any other artistic passions?
Marc: ……Nope.
Advice to young architects?
Marc: Work with people you like, don’t work at a firm for the sake of working. The best thing I ever did was to “push” myself into the front door of Yabu Pushelberg. And build a great reference library of books.
Must read magazines and books?
Marc: I read a lot of architectural and design books, design types and styles along with detail type influences. But, I just read a great book called “The Rape of Europa.”
Most valued material possession(s)?
Marc: My watch collection and my RC helicopters. And my dog is pretty cool too.
Finish the sentence, “If I weren’t an architect I’d be…”
Marc: …A fashion designer.
Favorite meal to make at home?
Marc: BBQ Steak!!
Favorite neighbourhood restaurant and favorite restaurant abroad?
Marc: Toronto, Bairrada Churrasqueria
L.A., Gjlena on Abbot Kinney
NYC, The Lion
Paris, Le Claude Sainlouis – Restaurant des Presidents
