Jay-Z has decided to change the game. Or, just to strike a deal that ensures about a million early album sales for maximum $$$. We think a little of both. In a twist on the usual free-for-all internet release, Samsung purchased copies of the album for their users in advance at $5 a pop – and on July 4, all Galaxy users will be able to download Jay-Z’s new album Magna Carta Holy Grail (for free!) 72 hours before its official release. Move so brilliant we’re not sure why the Genius Bar didn’t think of it first.
The deal doesn’t hurt Jay-Z, either: it almost guarantees the album will go platinum. “The internet is like the wild wild west,”Jay-Z said when revealing the plan in a public announcement during the Miami-San Antonio NBA finals game on Sunday night. “We need to write the new rules”. Grumpily, Kanye-DJ and Fools Gold Record co-founder A-Track tweeted: “that Samsung shit is corny“.
A-Track is about as jealous as everyone without a Samsung: for Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note II users, July 4 will be like Christmas morning. iPhone users are confused as to why they aren’t receiving priority treatment. And anyone with Blackberry really isn’t surprised.
