Overheated circuit breaker results in a downtown Toronto blackout

One of the many pictures of Thursday night’s Toronto blackout, as posted by HiMY SYeD, under the trending hashtag, #darkto

A blackout struck the east end of downtown Toronto, leaving more than 6,500 homes without power, for close to eight hours, on Thursday night.

Toronto Hydro said an overheated circuit breaker was to blame, affecting the downtown core from Carlton Street to Queen’s Quay, between Yonge Street and Bayview Avenue. The circuit breaker, at the Toronto Hydro power station near the corner of George and Adelaide Streets, caught on fire, but was quickly extinguished at around 8 p.m. the same night.

Roughly $50,000 worth of Toronto Hydro equipment was damaged, and needed to be replaced. The National Post reports that power was restored to the city at around 4 a.m., just in time for a 36 C high.

Tim Hortons adds free Wi-Fi

From debit cards to free Wi-Fi, get ready to spend even more time at Tim Hortons. Tim Hortons Inc. announced plans to add free wireless network access to over 2,000 of its Canadian restaurants, on Thursday.

The move may seem unconventional for the popular, hometown Timbit chain, which recently removed signs prohibiting patrons from loitering on-site for more than 20 minutes. In an effort to compete with coffee rival Starbucks Corp., which added free Wi-Fi to 750 of its Canadian locations two years ago, Tim Hortons is working to get their guests to stay longer, and spend more.

Though some Tims have already started to provide free Wi-Fi, the Financial Post is reporting that close to 90 per cent of the locations will be cyber-friendly by September. Unconventional locations, like gas station kiosks, are not currently scheduled to receive this enhanced service, which will be provided by Bell Mobility.

Finally – some answers to Prometheus!

A French Amazon listing gives hope that, finally, movie-goers will be getting some answers to the much-discussed film, Prometheus.

The ambiguous sci-fi pseudo-prequel left viewers with an infinite amount of questions in June, is still playing, but the movie’s French Blu-ray will be released with the four other Alien movies, called Evolution: From Alien to Prometheus. The list of extras promises 15 minutes of deleted or alternate scenes from the film, and a copy of the first and final draft of the screenplay.

Still, it remains unclear if Americans and Canadians will receive the same set of extras, or collector’s edition packaging. But, if nothing else, maybe there will be more of Guy Pearce in make-up. Right? What was that black goo?
