Get that wiener out of your mouth! Toronto street meat vendors are no longer restricted to selling hotdogs and sausages. Thanks to a unanimous city council decision Thursday, food carts can now offer a variety of menu items including pre-packaged salads, whole fruits and vegetables and bagels. It’s a step in the right direction for Toronto’s burgeoning street food scene after the city’s restrictive “A la Cart” program was killed last year.
Here’s a complete list of newly allowed menu options:
- Pre-packaged cut fruits and vegetables using only vinaigrette dips;
- Whole fruits and vegetables, including corn on the cob;
- Pre-packaged fruit salad;
- Bagels with individual serving containers of butter, margarine, peanut butter or jam;
- Pre-packaged nuts and seeds;
- Pre-packaged salads containing only vegetables and/or fruits with all dressings to be pre-packaged and not requiring refrigeration;
- Pre-packaged Tabbouleh salad and pita bread;
- Soups;
- Pre-cooked veggie burgers;
- Coffee and tea.
It will be up to existing vendors to decide what they’re going to offer their customers as the city is not issuing new licenses. But don’t worry. This news is sure to launch a thousand tweets about how the city still needs to change their rules for food trucks.
