Chris Hadfield serenaded Chris Hadfield Public School students from space this morning, playing a tune on his Vancouver-built Larrivée guitar. The Canadian Commander of the International Space Station played the guitar after a 7th grade student asked him if the space station environment made his guitar sound different than on Earth.
Explaining that the guitar tended to go out of tune more often due to the dry air and the fact that the guitar itself couldn’t be put down on a surface, having to be hooked by its tuners instead. “But it ends up sounding pretty good”, said the astronaut.
Hadfield’s known for playing his guitar in bands back down on Earth, including some made up of fellow astronauts, and might even try recording the first album from space. He’s also updated the space station’s music selection with a Chris Hadfield original song, “Canadian Tire,” and the likes of Canadian mainstays Leonard Cohen, Blue Rodeo, and the Barenaked Ladies.
See below for a video of the first original recording form the International Space Station and watch Hadfield playing the guitar this morning here.
