Reporting a parking violation for a cut of the fine? There’s an “army of snitches” for that. A new app out of Winnipeg will allow Canadians to rat out their fellow citizens to the fuzz, earning some quick and dirty money. “Spotsquad” would allow its users to send pictures of parking violations straight to the cops, because “if you can snap a picture and make $8, who’s not going to do that?” That’s according to co-founder Chris Johnson.
“People look at it the wrong way (like) we’re building an army of snitches. But if you look at it the right way, just don’t park illegally and we won’t have a problem.” The app will function similarly to Parking Mobility, a Texas-based app which functions off of altruism rather than self-interest, giving its profit to local charities. Parking Mobility project director Mack Marsh shared some harsh words about Spotsquad, claiming: “there is not a city in the world that would allow that because what you create then is vigilantism. When the individual who reports a crime profits from the reporting of that crime, then that crime is no longer enforceable.”
