Dalton McGuinty resigns, prorogues and may challenge Trudeau

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty shocked the province by announcing his resignation as the provincial Liberal leader on Monday night.

McGuinty is stepping down following a series of scandals, saying that after 16 years as party leader and nine as premier, it is time for new blood.

“It’s time for renewal, it’s time for the next Liberal premier, it’s time for the next set of Liberal ideas to guide our province forward,” said McGuinty, as quoted in 680 News.

The announcement also included a possible hint at running for federal Liberal leadership, and challenging perceived frontrunner, Justin Trudeau. McGuinty told reporters, “I am not making any plans whatsoever beyond my duties here at Queen’s Park.” Later, he said, “All I said is I don’t have any plans. That’s all I said.”

Moving forward, the Ontario Liberals will hold its own leadership campaign, and McGuinty will continue to serve as the MPP for Ottawa-South until the next election. In the interim, until a new Liberal leader and Premier is named, the provincial legislature will be adjourned.

Ontario: deficit free by 2017-2018

Missing McGuinty already? Fret not. Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan said the province is on track to eliminate the deficit by the 2017-2018 fiscal year.

Thanks to higher-than-expected revenues, Duncan said the current fiscal year’s deficit projection is $14.4-billion, over $400-million less than what was forecast in the 2012 budget.

CityNews writes the finance minister will not speed up the deficit-reduction process, and that the projected end-date of 2017-2018 is a feasible one.

Duncan also projected growth in the province’s GDP by two per cent in 2012, 1.9 per cent in 2013, 2.3 per cent in 2014 and 2.4 per cent in 2015.

K-Stew & R-Pattz reunite

Love conquers all! Maybe. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are reportedly dating again, after a cheating scandal resulted in a brief split.

The Twilight stars were spotted leaving a Loz Feliz-area Los Angeles bar on Sunday night, and Stewart reportedly rested her head on Pattinson’s chest. Earlier this summer, US Weekly published photos of Stewart canoodling with her Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders, leading to the couple’s alleged breakup.

This was the first time the two had been seen together since the supposed split, but at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Stewart told the Associated Press, “We’re going to be fine… We’re totally fine.”

Stewart and Pattinson are set to promote the final Twilight film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, next month, before its Nov. 16 release.
