Since the SETI Institute has invited the public to vote on the names of the recently discovered 4th and 5th moons of Pluto, there has been an interesting turn of events. William Shatner aka Star Trek’s Captain Kirk has proposed the name Vulcan, as Vulcan is a god in the Roman pantheon and is related to Pluto. Not only that but it is also the home planet of the USS Enterprise’s pointy eared and green blooded first officer Spock. Trekkies all over the world have paid it forward and it is now the number one name, ahead of Cerberus and Styx, for one of the two Pluto moons. After voting closes on February 25th, Mark Showalter the researcher and co-discoverer of the moons will take these names before the International Astronomical Union (IAU) for a final decision. Will the Trekkies win? In the 1970s, the very first space shuttle was named Enterprise thanks to a campaign by Star Trek fans. We wouldn’t be surprised if this happened again.
