You’ve heard about Wikipedia shutting down. You’ve marveled at the design wizardry of Michael Moore (seriously). You laughed at this anti-censorship app. Updated: The Oatmeal has the best SOPA page, hands down. But do you understand why you should give a damn?
Few Canadian news outlets have covered the story. But if you want to get caught up it’s really easy. Read our three-point list about why Canadians should care:
- Use American sites? Soon they could become seriously compromised. Want to send that youtube clip to your friends where you covered Nirvana. Copyright violation! YouTube will be obliged to censor your account.
- Use Google? Hope you didn’t like the search results because they will change to exclude any website that may host material that infringes on copyright.
- Given the way the law is currently written all Canadian IP addresses (because we use the same IP registrar) may be considered by the American government and courts to be, well, American. This is, to put it mildly, a huge threat to Canadian sovereignty.
