What We're Doing This Week

Well, well, well. This week I advise you to get naked and re-live wars, all to the soothing strains of “Call me, Maybe.”

World Naked Bike Ride – Toronto: Just as it sounds. Start at Coronation Park at Noon (near the foot of Bathurst). Ride leaves at 1 pm sharp, various major locations throughout city. Hey, the human body is a beautiful thing (sometimes). Still, I will mercifully be out of town. June 16.

The Mark Inside will kick your ass, musically, using their noisemakers. June 16 @ The Gladstone Ballroom, 11 pm.

If you like to write poetry/fiction and you’re awesome at it, enter this contest. Winners will receive a round-trip ticket to POP Montreal from September 19-23, 2012, a VIP pass to the Pop Montreal Festival, free accommodation at a bed and breakfast, fall publication in Matrix Magazine with full honorarium, and presentation at a special Matrix Litpop event during the festival. Deadline is July 1st so get on it.

World’s Largest QR Code (made out of people): At 2 p.m., June 16 a reported 1,300 people will gather at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York to build the world’s larget QR code, a community-gathering project in support of Youth Unlimited North York. Follow link for information on how to participate.

MMVA’s with the usual coterie of pop pablum: Katy Perry, the Biebs, Selena Gomez, LMFAO, et al. Get your teen scream on. June 17 at Queen & John.

Have a total cargasm at the Yorkville Exotic Car Show. Classic & Exotic Cars from 12-5 pm along Bloor St. West, between Avenue & Bay. June 17.

Perez Hilton’s One Night in Toronto. Featuring an interactive photo booth and performers – inc. Call Me Maybe Carly Rae! 8:30 pm, June 17 @ Club XS. 261 Richmond St. W. Ticket sale proceeds go to MusiCounts.

In Nayman’s Terms: The Films of Stanley Kubrick. Full Metal Jacket clips & lecture. 7 pm. June 18 @ Miles Nadal JCC, 750 Bloor St. West. Tix $12, Students $6. Do you maggots understand that?!

Summer Mixtape Sessions #1 Feat. Kate Simko @ Wrongbar (1279 Queen West). Advance tix here. June 22.

Battle of York Walking Tour. June 22. Starts at the Dufferin Gate on the Exhibition Grounds, just south of the TTC stop. 7-8:30 pm. Relive this 1813 battle where 2000 Americans landed and cleaned up. Start your own mini-skirmishes with fellow walkers.

The TIFF Bell Lightbox is screening ALPS at 3:30 and 8:30 pm, starting June 22. It’s difficult to describe the film ALPS in much detail without compromising its uncanny effect. Suffice it to say that Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film, which was a favourite film from TIFF 2011, shares certain elements with his previous Dogtooth, including a female lead (Aggeliki Papoulia) and an extreme mode of living, but it’s a far more complicated, suggestive work
