Staffer's Picks: Ed Wilkinson-Latham, Editorial Director
Editorial director Ed Wilkinson-Latham's Holiday '11 wishlist.

Ed Wilkinson-Latham is a plucky young lad who just happens to oversee everything you see here. Edward, which is what we assume his parents call him, can often be heard muttering incomprehensible things under his breath or animatedly sounding off about Tin Tin. He begins each and every morning with an espresso and tea—yes, at the same time. What sort of gifts would one buy such a creature? Well, dear reader, read on!

1. “I had a pair of Redwings years ago and they were like wearing deep sea divers boots—so heavy in comparison to other boots. The Wabasha boots have the needed protection from the elements but can also be worn with a pair of dark jeans and an ironed shirt for that Christmas dinner at Grandma’s.” $250 at Uncle Otis.

2. “I’ve been using Nigel Slater’s Tender Vol. 1, which is all about eating more veg, for sometime now and still have oodles of recipes to get through, but I still want someone to buy me Vol 2. Nigel Slater is one of the best food writers around and the simple act of reading a recipe becomes a fantastic food tour.” $32.64 at Amazon.com.

3. “Fishing is one of those pastimes that many Torontonians associate with children or unemployed men who cast a line in the Humber River, but Ontario has some excellent fly fishing rivers. Tenkara is a traditional Japanese method of fly fishing without the complication of a reel and all the pompous bravado and expense. Remarkably simple: a novice can be catching fish in no time.” $235.95 at TenkaraUSA.com.

4. “I have to say that over the past year I’ve become addicted to Moksha Yoga or Hot Yoga. Sweating like a beast for an hour while detoxifying, toning and exercising is one of my week’s highlights; there is no better way than turning off the brain and forgetting about everything for a short while. When Christmas is over, hot yoga studios all over town will be packed with those who wish to detoxify from all the yuletide over-eating and drinking. Just like I started a year ago.” 10-class card for $135.

5. “Krzysztof Kieslowski was a brilliant film director and the ‘Three Colours’ trilogy stands out in particular as a cinematic achievement that few directors can even dream of. Beautiful, painful and masterfully shot, it may not be action-packed and full of thrills, or everyone’s idea of Christmas viewing, but it appeals to my inner Frenchman in oh so many ways.” $80 at Amazon.ca.
