65-year-old New Zealander Denis Duthie has a complicated relationship with alcohol. It’s alcohol that is responsible for him both losing his vision and gaining it back again.
After drinking too much vodka at his parent’s wedding anniversary, Duthie, a diabetic for twenty years, lost his vision. He decided to try and sleep it off.
When he woke up in the morning, Duthie still couldn’t see, so his wife took him to the hospital. At the hospital, doctors quickly realized that Duthie was suffering from methanol poisoning, which caused formaldehyde to over accumulate in his body, leading to his loss of vision. The solution? Pump alcohol straight into his bloodstream… okay, more like stomach, but still.
Unfortunately the hospital was running low on medical alcohol, so an orderly was sent to a local store to buy a bottle of whisky. Thankfully for Duthie, he got the good stuff: Johnnie Walker Black.
After having the whisky pumped into his stomach, Duthie quickly regained his eyesight. Since the incident, he has, understandably, sworn off the hooch altogether. [Stuff]
