Scottish government's "Drinking Mirror" app warns of wrinkles and weight gain to discourage excessive alcohol consumption

The new “Drinking Mirror” app created by the Scottish government, warns against drinking excessively, as it demonstrates the effects of wreckless alcohol consumption. The campaign’s Drink Smarter website targets people’s vanity by showing an image of a woman (pictured above) to demonstrate how the drinking mirror works, along with a warning that “deeper wrinkles, red cheeks and weight gain” are just some of the visible effects of regular heavy drinking. The website also states that, women shouldn’t regularly drink more than 2 – 3 units a day and men, 3 – 4. Also, one should aim to have at least two alcohol-free days a week. The app is available for both Android and iPhones. It works by taking a photo and information on one’s drinking habits, and then “aging” or “morphing” the photo into what would resemble the person who continuously drank at that rate for 10 years. Overall, the campaign aims to make people aware of the fine line between social drinking and drinking too much, especially when people drink in the home.
