After serving as executive vice-resident of English language services for over two years, Kirstine Stewart resigned from CBC yesterday to join Twitter Canada as managing director. Stewart is the first employee for Twitter Canada. The announcement came today from Adam Bain, president of global revenue at Twitter. He added that the company is now hiring in Toronto.
Speculation is that the opening of a Canadian office is the first step in establishing ad sales and partnerships north of the border where Twitter is already used heavily. The establishment of the Canadian office will take place over the summer. Last week, New York Times reported that Twitter signed a deal with Starcom MediaVest Group to help them develop a “virtual lab where the two companies will conduct research that will help advertisers connect Twitter and TV together.”
Since her start with the CBC in 2006, Stewart played a role in helping the broadcaster modernize, in particular “by developing a strategic plan for broadband and mobile content,” according to her CBC bio. Of leaving Canada’s public broadcaster, Stewart said in a statement, “I’m proud of what we’ve done together these past seven years. I will miss the CBC family dearly, but I know that even when one leaves the CBC, the CBC never really leaves you. It’s in my DNA, and I’m all the better for it.”
Neil McEneaney, currently the general manager of finance and strategy the CBC will take over as interim vice-president of English language services.
