How do you get ready for a DIY Bike Rave? Easy. Wrap your bike in glowsticks, flashing lights, streamers, and fuzz. Head down to the meeting place with your iPod, having downloaded the rave’s playlist that dropped online the week before. Press play, blast your sounds and bike across the city, synched up with the crowd speeding from one dance destination to the next. Ride it out in a swarm of tutu-wearing, helmet-covered ravers across the streets of Toronto at night.
The DIY volunteer repair shop and advocacy center Bike Pirates is throwing the second-ever bike rave in Toronto on Friday, August 9, 2013 at 8:30 pm. The concept was started up in Vancouver a few years back and has made it’s way over to Toronto. After a successful ride last year Bike Pirates is throwing the thing for a second year.
The music of the night will move with the cyclists: everyone will press play on their listening devices at the same time. Music will be decided in advance as the organizers put together a playlist made up of cyclist’s suggestions. If you have a song you want to hear, email them to torontobikerave@gmail.com. Maximum 5 suggestions per person, with a the quality of each track being at least 192 kbps.
Bike Pirates also released a list of rules. It isn’t a race, it’s a unified movement. If you find yourself in a confrontation, be friendly. “Bike ravers are lovers, not fighters”.
