After languishing for almost two years, Ontario Place is set to become a hub of city activity once again.
This morning, Ontario’s tourism minister, Michael Coteau, announced a $100-million plan to revitalize the Toronto landmark. The first phase of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2016, will see Ontario Place receive a new waterfront promenade, an outdoor space called the “Celebration Common” and additional music facilities. Along with the announcement, the provincial government released renderings of the proposed additions, a couple of which you can see below.
Those worried about the venue’s iconic Cinesphere need not worry; both so called pods will be spared the wrecking ball. That said, the government did not mention when they will be re-opened to the public.
In 2012, the Ontario Liberals, looking for ways to tackle the province’s growing $15-billion debt, closed the park as the number of visitors declined. However, during the recent election, Premier Kathleen Wynne promised to revitalize the space.
What do you guys think of the proposed revitalization? [via blogTO]
