After months of construction, fort York’s handsome new visitor centre is set to open this weekend.

In celebration of the opening, the centre will offer free admission and will host a variety of special events, including a performance by Indian jazz and funk band Autoricksaw. Also planned are several interactive exhibits on the site’s history.

The centre, which is located outside of the walled fort at Fort York Boulevard, was jointly designed by Patkau Architects Inc. and Kearns Mancini Architects Inc. of Vancouver and Toronto, respectively. The 24,000 square foot building makes innovative of use of modern materials like frosted glass and rusted steel to give the site a striking look.

The centre will be open from 12pm to 7pm on both days.
