Loblaws experimenting with drive-through grocery service in Toronto

Loblaws is about to attempt to make grocery shopping a bit more convenient.

The Canadian supermarket chain is experimenting with a so-called click-and-collect service. The experiment will start with Loblaws’ Richmond Hill location—located at 301 High Tech Rd.

A click-and-collect services works by having the consumer purchase their groceries online and then picking them up a local store.

The service has several advantages over door-to-door delivery for both the consumer and grocery store.

For the consumer, the service is almost always more affordable than having one’s groceries delivered to their home. Moreover, consumers don’t have to block out a chunk of time to be there to receive the order.

For the grocery store, it saves a lot of money not having to invest in the infrastructure required to make home deliveries possible.

Click-and-collect grocery stores have been gaining popularity throughout Europe, especially in France and England, though they have yet to make a big splash in North America.
