One can find all sorts of knickknacks on eBay, but I doubt anyone expected to see a piece of Toronto’s history show up on the e-commerce website. However, that’s exactly what happened on Tuesday night when Sam Grosso, the owner of the El Mocambo, put the music venue’s iconic neon palm up on eBay.
This follows the new that Grosso had sold the space to a computer retailer in September.
Anyone that wishes to do so can now bid on the sign. At the time of writing the highest bid was a modest $7,000. The auction is set to finish at the end of the month.
Grosso told NOW‘s Julia Leconte that he put up the sign on the website “Because I want to get something stirred up. I want to see if the city can come in and take it off our hands.” He estimates that it will cost him about $4,000 to take the sign down, money he apparently doesn’t have.
Now, all that remains to be seen is where the sign will show up. [Via NOW]
