Sounding Off: Nautiluss goes 'Ultraviolet'

Until Graham Bertie was best known as one half of Thunderheist. Reincarnated as Nautiluss, Bertie is following subtler, more sophisticated vectors on his new-new, “Ultraviolet."

It’s always cool to see creative people move through new and different phases, modes and faces. Along with the rest of the world, I’d known Graham Bertie’s grimey, dancier side as Grahmzilla, one half of the recently disbanded Thunderheist. Reincarnated as Nautiluss, Bertie is following subtler, more sophisticated vectors on his new-new, “Ultraviolet,” featuring Lord Skywave (Simian’s Simon Lord). Snare-y and percussive up top, the song pairs dulcet, schoolboy harmonies over an eerie, atmospheric build. The shadowy shroud of “Ultraviolet” gets metastasized into Nautiluss’ B-side instrumental, “Bleu Monday.” There’s a lot of shimmery stuff to appreciate here, but get your thrills in the grim, airy bass below.
