Finnish cellphone maker Nokia has announced the Lumia 820 and 920 in an attempt to regain footing in the ultra-competitive smartphone market. That latter phone comes equipped with a speedy 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system, 32 GB of onboard storage, a 4.5 inch display, and, best of all, the both the 820 and 920 come in a variety of vibrant colours, which is a stark contrast to the majority of black and grey phones that currently dominate the market place. To put those specs in perspective, the 920 is competitive with other recent high-end phones like the Galaxy S III and and One X from Samsung and HTC, respectively.
Like Waterloo-based Research In Motion, the once dominant Nokia has struggled to adjust to the emergence of Apple and Google in the smartphone race, and this latest crop of phones represents Nokia’s best bet at reclaiming their lost position in the marketplace. However, while both of the phones Nokia announced today are competitive with the iPhone and current crop of top-tier Android devices, Apple is set to announce the successor to the iPhone 4S on September 12, a device, like it’s predecessors, that is more than likely to capture the imagination of consumers in the market for a new smartphone.
